Today's Topic: The Summer of All Movies
In the Smith household, where I live, movies are a high priority. They are ranked above such things as housework, yard work, and "any-kind-of" work. At one time I wanted to become a movie reviewer, but then I realized that I inherited my mother's movie reviewing abilities. Here's what I mean: when asked what she thought of the billion-dollar-budget, multiple-Academy-Award-winning film Titanic, my mom simply said, "I didn't like it. There was too much running about."
It is in this spirit that I now present my commentary on several summer movies. I was also inspired, in part, by the marquee that my wife and I saw when leaving a theater, which said that they were showing a movie titled Some of all Fears. I wonder if it's anything like that recent Tom Clancy film?
One of the first movies we saw this summer (and my wife was hoping I wouldn't admit this to anyone) was Undercover Brother. Insert your own "retest for Mensa" joke here.
Next we saw About a Boy, but I don't remember what it was about.
I slept through Insomnia, but my wife told me it was pretty good.
Spiderman was the first summer blockbuster. I liked everything about the movie except the part where the guy got special powers from being bitten by a genetically engineered spider, and the part where he used his abilities to fight crime and defeat The Green Goblin. Just kidding. The part I really didn't like was when I realized that the film made more money than I will ever see in my lifetime. That part was depressing.
Star Wars Episode II was a must see. I thought it was excellent and appreciated it even more the second time watching it, but I was disappointed by two things: I was kind of hoping that at the very start of the movie, Jar Jar would get hit by an asteroid. Sadly, it didn't happen. The second thing I wanted to see was Yoda yodeling. I've yet to see the yodeling Yoda I yearned for.
My favorite movie so far this summer was The Bourne Identity. It is about a man who cannot remember who he is. He finds out and then decides that he didn't really want to know. That's kind of like me because before I saw the trailer for The Bourne Identity, I didn't know what it was about, but after I saw the trailer I did, but I wished I didn't, because I wanted to be surprised by the movie. That reminds me, by the way, that I have already spent six and a half hours this summer just watching movie trailers.
Minority Report was a good film as well. The plot revolves around a police force that stops crimes before they happen. Too bad they couldn't do anything about Undercover Brother.
Well, it's been an exhausting summer so far... I think I'll stay home for a while. Maybe I'll rent a couple movies. I really need to relax and get away from reality. That'll be a nice change.
